A Guide to Insulin Use For Diabetics

By Matthew Walker

You just received the revelation that your physician is adding insulin to your diabetes treatment plan. The utilisation of insulin to govern your diabetes can be confusing and threatening. It doesn't have to be. Using insulin is a positive experience as it helps you to control your diabetes.

The first thing to remember is that insulin isn't a punishment in any form. If you are using insulin, it's often because insulin is absent from your body, or your body still makes insulin but it is not enough. Often oral meds are no longer working, so insulin is added to your treatment plan. Your doctor will discuss your dosing wants with you.

Insulin injections are nothing to be afraid of, even for folk that are afraid of needles. Advanced technology has made the needles so little and thin the insulin injection isn't felt. Used properly together with your meal plan and exercise, insulin can offer you fantastic control.

There are many different guides on the way to self administer an insulin injection, so this subject will not be covered in this guide. The basics of using insulin are straightforward, and need awareness of how insulin works which your health practitioner should explain to you. Insulin use also needs knowledge of insulin delivery methods, and insulin supplies that will aid in making your life with insulin a breeze.

Insulin delivery

Insulin delivery systems are a matter of need and choice. Insulin users that have insulin pumps as their delivery technique have very dissimilar guiding principles that will not be covered here. The focus of insulin delivery methods for this text will be on syringes, insulin pens, jet injectors and breathed insulin.

Dose amount and syringe size

Insulin syringes and needles come in various sizes. The amount of your insulin dose determines the scale of the syringe that you're going to need to use. If you are taking 30 units or less, a 3/10 cc (30 unit) syringe will work. If you're taking 31 to 50 units, 1/2 cc syringe (50 unit) will be needed. If your dose is 51 units or more, a 1 cc (100 unit) syringe will be required. The needle sizes change for each syringe size. Syringes could be purchased from a chemist.

Insulin syringes are disposable, and will be dropped after one use. A bio dangerous container like a sharps container will be needed to hold discarded syringes. These boxes can be acquired from some waste disposal services, and may bought from any dispensary. Disposal of sharps containers needs special handling. Your doctor, diabetes teacher, or pharmacy should be well placed to tell you where sharps can be discarded in your area.

Insulin Vials

Liquid insulin comes in vials and insulin pens. Vials are placed in the fridge till use, and are discarded after the insulin is utilized up, or after 28 days, whichever comes first. Vials hold assorted amounts of insulin depending on the brand. Insulin is drawn up into the syringe from the vial and can be injected into one or two areas of the body, customarily the thigh or stomach. Most sorts of insulin require a prescription.

Insulin pens

Insulin pens are a convenient way to administer insulin. An insulin pen seems like an oversized ink pen, and uses disposable needles. There are two different sorts of pens. One type is prefilled with 300 units of insulin. The prefilled pen is discarded after the insulin is used up or after 28 days, the same as for vials. The other type uses insulin cartridges, and the cartridges are modified utilizing the same schedule that is employed for prefilled pens. Insulin pens are not chilled after the 1st use.

Needles for the insulin pens come in numerous sizes. Insulin doses are dialed on the pen in one half and one unit increments depending on the type of pen used. The results of dosing by pen is less dosing errors. Insulin pens are handy, and permit straightforward dosing for folks on a tight schedule. Pens are also circumspect. It is not advised that pen needles be used frequently for the same reasons that syringes should not be reused; bacteria and possible infection. Pen needles should be dropped in a sharps container.

Another insulin delivery gizmo which falls into the insulin pen class is known as the InnoLet. This device appears like a kitchen timer with a huge dial. The InnoLet holds 300 units of insulin and is terribly convenient for people with visible difficulties.

Jet Injectors

Jet injectors release a small stream of insulin thru the skin by employing a mechanism that creates high pressure air. The injector doesn't use a needle. After the insulin dose is loaded into the injector, the injector is placed against the skin and a button is pushed to release the insulin into the skin. Jet injectors are not very popular among insulin users due to bruising and other things.

Breathed Insulin

Exubera, the sole insulin that is breathed, received approval for use by the FDA in January of 2006. Your doctor will advise you if inhaled insulin is an alternative for you to use to treat your diabetes. Exubera comes packaged as a dry powder in blister packs, and the packs are loaded into an inhaler. The insulin is breathed into the lungs. This method of insulin delivery has some limitations that should be debated with your GP.

Diabetes supplies

After you pick which insulin delivery technique you will be using, a carry case will be needed to carry your insulin, meter and other obligatory items,eg sharps containers. A multitude of diabetes products are on the market to accommodate your needs. Selecting the best products will make the time that you spend on diabetes management more profitable. The most effective way to find diabetes products is to go looking for them online, or look in diabetes magazines.

It is important for insulin users to carry a meter and glucose capsules at all points. Insulin could cause "lows" which can cause unconsciousness if not treated swiftly. Insulin users also need to test more frequently than non-insulin users.

Now you have the insulin basics, you should be assured you can use insulin proficiently and painlessly as an element of your treatment plan. Debate with your GP which insulin delivery method is the best for you, and start on the way to better diabetes control.

Diabetes Diet and Body Detox Tips

By Warren Tattersall

There are a lot of Americans on a diabetes diet; you don't see them dying. Why then should you think that this drastic change in your eating habits is going to be the end of you? Well, it isn't, so you just need to pucker up and make the best of it.

There are lots of foods here in the United States that are rich in the minerals you need to help speed up your recovery from diabetes; those are the foods you need to go for. The moment you know you suffer from the ailment, even before you get sentenced to such a life by the doctor, you need to seek out these foods and indulge.

There are several ways by which you can contribute to your treatment for diabetes. If you ask me though, I think adhering to your diabetes diet of proteins and vitamins is by far the best thing you can do for yourself. If you can bring that to the table, you stand better chances of recovery.

In a diabetes diet, you are still eating perhaps as much as you used to, only you are eating something different. If you feel that bad about it, you can close your eyes and pictures yourself eating those fatty foods you used to while you shove down the greens. Whatever it is, you just have to stay with the program.

There are detox books, detox videos, detox shows and detox "bestsellers." There are detox everything-you-can-get-your-hands-on if you are looking for them. Detox is like the next best thing in today's world. And to think that we didn't know of this ten years ago!

Detoxing can get confusing when you are trying to bring too many different sources of information together. Even on the internet, there are conflicting reports on what gives with a detox. Do yourself a favor and stick to what you believe in.

There are loads of rewards that you can get from a detox diet. To start with, you could never have been better physically than you would be when you just complete your detox diet; secondly, you would feel closer to nature and better connected to the universe when you take yourself through the program. And that would only be the beginning.

A lot of people have written a lot of things about detox and dieting, but how many of them really practice what they preach? When you eventually do decide to do detox, make certain that you are choosing from someone who has done it and living the life.

How Does Exercise Help Type 2 Diabetes?

By Gloria Reibin

Physical workouts can, not only accelerate your health and fitness, it can also help normatize Type 2 Diabetes.

Research and personal testimony have disclosed a list of benefits. Just by including workouts every week, you can lose weight, lower cholesterol, build muscle, lower blood pressure and get more energy.

In addition, recently, I've seen testimonials from individuals practicing the newly discovered 7 Minute Workout techniques say that it has lowered their blood sugar levels. While 7 Minute Workout also uses diet, exercise has played an significant part.

A major advantage of exercise in controlling diabetes is the fact that it improves your body's use of insulin.

Normally, the pancreas releases insulin whenever a large amount of sugar in the bloodstream increases. This happens after a meal, for example. The insulin causes the liver and muscles to absorb the excess glucose, which ends in the lowering blood sugar levels.

When you workout, the body needs additional energy (glucose) for the exercising muscles. The glucose that is stored in the liver and muscles can be released for fuel.

But, enough from me, let's hear it from the horse's mouth.

Paul Douglas, a 7 minute student, explains the improvement he experiences in his blood sugar levels by doing exercises only 7 minutes a day, 3 times a week and following the systems suggestions on diet.

- "Last night after work my sugar was 6.4. Today three hours after lunch it was 6.5 (Normal is between 4-6 here in Canada). A far cry from the 15.6 reading I had ten days ago. Proof that smart diet and exercise will allow you to control diabetes instead of diabetes controlling you. (Sorry, I don't know how to convert it to US measurements.)"

Paul is a very motivated individual, so his results may not be yours.

However, combining workout, eating habits and other changes can be able to curb type 2 diabetes.

Life And Diabetes

By Zachary Justice

Every day, in the United States, more than 2000 new cases of diabetes are diagnosed. Type II diabetes is most common, and its symptoms are often few or absent.

Glucose is one of the many products of food digestion, and this sugar is carried by the blood to the cells of your body. Using a hormone known as insulin, made in the pancreas, cells process glucose into energy.

The liver, muscle, and fat cells of people with type II diabetes can't use insulin properly, and so will have trouble changing food to energy. Eventually, the pancreas cannot make enough insulin for the body's needs. Energy is greatly needed by the cells in our body when the amount of glucose increases.

This depletion of energy can be very harmful for the body. This will lead to kidney disease, nerve problems, blindness, and heart problems.

Diabetes can be caused by the lifestyle, environment, and heredity factors. Those that are already diagnosed with diabetes should aim to keep their glucose level under control.

But how do you know if you have type II diabetes? After all, it can have few symptoms or no symptoms in some patients. Be alert for signs like increased thirst or hunger, a change in weight, or blurred vision.

Simple changes such as eating right, managing your weight, and keeping your blood sugar level under control may be enough. But your doctor can prescribe you some diabetes-regulating medications to make it easier for you.

Diabetes is a serious ailment with extreme consequences if it isn't treated properly. You can keep your body healthy by following your doctor's advice.

Be aware that this article is written for information purposes only. See your physician for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Innovative Sharps Diabetic Needle Disposal System Offers Complete Safety for All

By Matthew Walker

Over 1.4 billion syringes are used by patients at home and on a busy schedule every year. Acceptable disposal often is a problem, with about 385,000 accidental needle stick accidents every year in the U. S.. Post Medical, Inc. Manufactures and markets a protected sharps disposal system for home injectable medicines, The Voyager, providing a total diabetes needle disposal solution that eradicates random injury and potential exposure to blood-borne pathogens.

"Post Medical is committed to providing seamless, eco-friendly and safer sharps disposal solutions that improve the security of medical care workers, patients and the community," said Matthew Walker, President and Chief Operating Officer.

The Voyager is large enough to accommodate over 100 needles, yet sufficiently small to slip into a pocket, purse, backpack or briefcase. It offers discreet sharps disposal anytime or place it's needed. Many matching products simply clip the used needle, leaving a tiny bit of it still observable. The Voyager is specifically engineered to sever the needle and center from the rest of the syringe barrel, effectively stopping any reuse of the syringe. The Voyager holds 100-120 insulin syringe needles and the container can be placed in regular household trash in some states. Check local and state rules for proper needle disposal.

The Voyager accepts 1/3cc, 1/2cc and 1cc insulin syringes, along with most lancets and glucose test strips. There's never any danger of family, friends, children or pets accidentally being stuck by a second hand needle. It also provides a safe solution for waste handlers and others in the chain of disposal that are in danger of needles placed in dangerous containers such as bleach bottles and coffee cans.

Patients with diabetes remain active players in a wide range of activities, and the Voyager diabetic needle disposal system by Post Medical, Inc. Allows them to enjoy life to the fullest, without being concerned about the disposal of their medical supplies or inflicting accidental needle sticks. It is an ideal home and travel solution that offers complete safety for family, buddies, pets and disposal workers.

Manage Your Condition Better With A Diabetes Diet

By Warren Tattersall

You may still enjoy all that you used to enjoy, but now you simply have to do them in controlled portions. I am talking about the diabetes diagnosis you got the other day, and the new diet you have to adopt. You may still enjoy eating, but now you simply have to eat in the right portions.

With common sense, you will be able to keep the ailment in check, even though you don't find cure. Use your common sense in your diabetes diet.

There is no food that is poison in itself, but they could be to you depending on your orientation or the condition of your health. As a diabetic, for instance, there simply are some stuffs that you do not need to eat a lot of. Stuffs like sugar and carbohydrates are not good for your health in such a condition. Instead, you need vitamins. Lots and lots of vitamins.

Blood sugar control is what the physician is trying to do when they ask you to cut back on your sweet and high calorie foods. It is in your own best interest to cooperate with them all the way, afterall, it is your life they are trying to save.

A diabetes diet is the kind of diet that keeps you healthy when you suffer from diabetes. You see, certain eating habits have been known to contribute to a worse diabetic condition, but with the right kind of eating, you can still stay alive while the rest of the treatment goes on.

You know, your food intake is critical once you know that you suffer from diabetes. Having eaten yourself into the medical condition, the time has come for you to eat yourself out of it. That, you get to do by sticking strictly to doctor's medication and eating orders. No question.

Some doctors might find it difficult to explain to you, but I don't think there should be a lot of trouble with that. You are being put on a new and strict diet because you have been discovered to suffer from diabetes. No, the diet does not heal you, but it keeps the condition from getting worse.

Certainly, taking on the new diabetes diet is not going to be easy. Already you are used to eating the dangerous way; it must have contributed to you having the disease in the first place. However, you do need to break those old habits and take on the new eating ones. I'm talking about your life here.

In a diabetes diet, you have got to be very meticulous about the portions that are given to you in the physician's instructions. If they say you can only have carbohydrates once a day, you are going to have to keep it that way, no compromise.

Why is Type 2 Diabetes Becoming

More Common in Children and

Adults?

Type 2 diabetes is epidemic in almost every country in the world. Once a disease associated with people aged 60 and above, it is now being diagnosed in children as young as eight. Dr. Jean-Claude DesMangles of the Creighton University School of Medicine, estimates that 45 per cent of all new cases of diabetes in children are type 2, whereas 50 years ago type 2 diabetes in children was almost unknown.

Children diagnosed with diabetes type 2 face many of the same deadly complications that were once seldom seen before the age of 65: They are equally likely to develop kidney disease after 20 years of the disease... as soon as their 20's and 30's the risk of fatal kidney disease is actually higher in young type 2 (non-insulin dependent).

Diabetics than in type 1 (insulin-dependent diabetics)In addition to striking earlier and earlier in life, type 2 diabetes is being diagnosed in more and more people of all ages. The percentage of adults who have this form of diabetes is six times higher in 2010 than it was in 1965.

Adult Onset Diabetes and

'Quacks'

Why is type 2 diabetes becoming more and more common?

The simple answer is: modern life requires much less physical activity than at any other period in recorded history.just reading a book about diabetes for example, once might have entailed thumbing through drawers of index cards to locate a book, and then walking through a library and reaching up to pick the book off the shelf. Now books about diabetes can be downloaded to an iPod or a Kindle eating a french fry required buying a potato, peeling it, soaking it in salt water, drying it out.

Then standing over the stove for half an hour, carefully fishing out the fries as they cooked. Now it is possible to pop frozen fries in the microwave riding a bus or walking to work used to be the norm. Now most people drive to work in their own cars.Less and less physical activity is required in daily life, but food contains more and more calories.

The protective effects of exercise are no longer part of the picture for tens of millions of people who are learning they have type 2 diabetes. There is no good denying that type 2 diabetes is an epidemic: there are currently 246 million diabetics in the world, and 90% of them have diabetes type 2. The good news is that with the right diet, nutritional supplements and lifestyle changes, you can actually reverse it!
