Getting Smart About Diabetes and Diet

By Karyah Olora

The rising trend of people incurring diabetes is on the high, however, most cases can be easily be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle. The end result here is that you have the authority over how you should deal with your health. Three things are very important when it comes to managing diabetes; first is by eating a healthy diet such as raw and organic foods, second is always to check for your weight and lastly is to get more exercise as you can.

Here are some of the tips for diabetes and diet:

Tip #1 Sweets are not totally ban from the diet plan. It is a good thing you can still eat sweets but in moderation. Treat this as a reward for yourself especially when you go out during weekends and share it with a friend so as to avoid eating it all to yourself. Also, eating small servings of food will help your body easily adjust to the change.

Tip #2 Minimize eating of foods that are rich in carbohydrates as they are easily converted into simple sugars making the person feel hungry and most likely will grab something to it. Raw and organic substances will not make you hungry right away and so will not prompt you to go snacking on foods that are high in carbs. In addition, food preferences can also include brown rice and whole grains. In terms of beverages, a glass of water is more suitable than sodas and commercial juices.

Tip #3 Always have breakfast in the morning. Skipping meals will only make you hungry and will most likely make you over eat. A healthy breakfast in the morning is highly recommended to start your day and keep high blood sugar levels stabilize. Always have a healthy snack during breaks so as not to keep you from getting hungry.

Tip #4 It is good to know what fats to avoid and what are not. Fats are labeled as bad, little did we know there are some that are good for us. Animal fats that are high in saturated and trans fats are highly avoided as they can be harmful to the body. Fats from plant sources are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and also contain unsaturated fats that are not harmful to the body. Other sources also include olive oil, avocado and nuts.

We can all begin to be healthy eaters and be smart in what we eat and knowing diabetes. There are a lot of information available out there but this all boils down to proper eating habits and exercise.
