Diabetic Diet, Say Yes to Carbohydrates
Eating Carbohydrates is all about a healthy ratio. The proper Diabetic diet has a goal of 50% Carbohydrates, 30% Fats and 20% Proteins. Doctors used to suggest cutting out all carbs - all of them, totally. Today that is not the case for Diabetics. Studies show that carbs fuel the body more than anything and abruptly stopping them causes problems. Increased proteins and fats cause added strain on the kidneys which process them. Kidney issues are common with Diabetes. Eat carbs just watch for the quantity and the form they come in.
Yes! Carbohydrates will be a part of your Diabetic diet and they come in three different types. Fiber, Starches and Sugars. Fiber is also known as roughage. Its in fruits and vegetables and 2 to 5 grams per serving is suggested. Next are Starches. Here we have the basics of potatoes, whole grains, peas, beans and legumes. Thirdly and most importantly, Sugars. Although they occur naturally in fruits and milks, sugar is added to almost everything. Its a food additive in nearly all the food we eat. So watch the carbs and try for 13 grams per 100 calories. You may adjust that as you practice with the ratios.
For Type I Diabetics, the amount of sugar you take in must be closely monitored so insulin doses may be adjusted. You must monitor both natural and added sugars to know how much insulin to take. Type II Diabetics have a little more wiggle room overall. With the correct diet, Diabetics may no longer need medication.
Two rules of thumb for Sugar use: Seek out regular sugar not High Fructose Corn Syrup. Stick to whole fruit not fruit juices. The form of sugar is very important to overall health not just blood levels.
That's it! Yes you can beat Diabetes! Diabetes is not a life sentence. You can beat Diabetes with the right diet. Dont be intimidated by the word diet because the right Diabetic diet will change your life and medication may be a thing of the past. If you eat healthy, stay away from HFCS and stay on the plan, you can eat carbs and still beat Diabetes!
