Stress Relief Ideas for a Person With Diabetes

By Robbie Bainer

Learning to deal with diabetes is stressful both for the person that has been diagnosed, as well as the immediate family, and everyone knows that stress is not good for our health. These days it is almost impossible to avoid stress with our hectic lifestyles, therefore it is important to find ways to relieve stress and help our bodies relax more. Here are some ideas on how a person with diabetes can deal with stress.

* Exercise regularly - One of the best ways to relieve your stress is to exercise regularly. When you exercise, your body releases feel-good hormones and the more you exercise, the better you feel. Try to exercise for at least thirty minutes a day for the best results.

* Enjoy time with friends - Take the time to get out and enjoy some time with great friends. Hangout, visit, maybe grab dinner and a movie. Being around other people and having fun will definitely take your mind off any problems you are dealing with and you will go home feeling refreshed and relaxed.

* Quiet time - It is very important that you set aside some quiet time in your busy schedule to look after yourself and be on your own. Perhaps you can relax and read a good book or listen to some nice music. Just take some time to unwind and enjoy yourself.

* Try meditating - Meditation is quite beneficial but it does take practice. The benefits are that it helps to completely clear your mind of any worry. Practice meditating at least 10 minutes each day. Find a quiet space in your home where you can sit comfortably without any distractions. Close your eyes and breathe regularly as you clear your mind of all thoughts. Do not focus on any new thoughts. Just let them drift away. Each day you will get better at this and you will find that it actually does help to release any tension in your body and wash away any stress.

* Talk it out - Holding onto your negative feelings will create even more stress in your body. Find a way to comfortably deal with things when you are upset. One great suggestion is to keep a journal and write out how you feel until you begin feeling better. A second way is to have a trusted friend that you can call and discuss things with.

* Pursue your interests - If you're interested in learning a new language or a new skill, get out and find a way to learn more about your interests. The more that you pursue your interests, the more you will have something about which to be excited, which will help to reduce your overall feeling of stress.

The bottom line is that even though you have diabetes, and it is always on your mind, you can't let it rule your life. With a little pre-planning, you can get out, enjoy activities, travel if you wish, and have lots of fun. All of that will definitely help to naturally reduce your stress levels.
